An eSIM router has a catch that nobody mentions on the box. To download an eSIM profile, the router needs an internet connection. But the eSIM is the internet connection. On a desk with a spare Ethernet line it does not matter. In a roadside cabinet, on a train or in a field, it is the difference between a two-minute job and a wasted trip.
Teltonika’s answer, announced in June 2026, is to let your phone do the downloading. The Teltonika RutOS app connects to the router over its local Wi-Fi and uses the phone’s own mobile data to fetch the eSIM profile from the operator. Here is how it works, and the things that catch people out.
What you need
- An eSIM-capable Teltonika router. Teltonika names the RUT241 (eSIM version), the RUTM52 and the ATRM50. Check that your exact model is an eSIM variant: many Teltonika routers are sold with and without eSIM.
- The Teltonika RutOS app, updated to the latest version, on iOS or Android.
- A phone with working mobile data. This is the internet source for the download.
- The eSIM details from your provider: a QR code, or the activation code (sometimes shown with the SM-DP+ address) to enter manually.
- The router’s Wi-Fi name and password, usually on the label on the underside.
Step by step in the RutOS app
- Update the app from the App Store or Google Play before you go to site.
- Power up the router and connect your phone to its Wi-Fi. The router broadcasts Wi-Fi even with no internet connection of its own.
- Open the app, log in to the router and go to Mobile. With no profile yet, you will see SIM status “Not inserted” and the data connection “Disconnected”. That is expected.
- Switch on the eSIM toggle, open eSIM Profiles and tap + ADD eSIM.
- Scan the QR code from your provider, or choose manual entry and type the activation code.
- Give the profile a name you will recognise later (for example the network and the site), then tap Download.
- Stay in the app until it finishes. Teltonika is explicit about this: leaving the app mid-download can interrupt it.
- Check the result. The new profile appears under eSIM Profiles with its toggle on. Within a minute or so the status should move from “Searching” to the operator’s name, and the data connection to “Connected”.
That is the whole job. The phone has done the one thing the router could not do for itself, and from now on the router uses its own eSIM connection.
The one phone setting that trips people up
Your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network that has no internet. Some phones notice that and keep using mobile data in the background. Others try to push everything down the Wi-Fi and the download quietly fails. If the download hangs or errors:
- Android: when the phone warns that the Wi-Fi has no internet, choose to stay connected, and make sure the option to switch to mobile data automatically is on.
- iPhone: make sure Wi-Fi Assist is on (Settings > Mobile Data, at the bottom).
- Either way: check you actually have a mobile signal where you are standing. A site with no 4G or 5G coverage on your phone will not download anything, however good the router’s antennas are.
Without the app: the web interface
If you have another internet source for the router, such as Ethernet into the WAN port, a Wi-Fi WAN connection or a plastic SIM in the other slot, you can do the same thing from a laptop in the router’s web interface:
- Network > Mobile > eSIM profiles: enter the activation code and click Download.
- Network > Mobile > General: in the eSIM section, enable it as the Default SIM and click Save & Apply.
- Status > Network > Mobile: confirm it has registered with the operator.
If you cannot see these options, switch the web interface to Advanced mode.
Things to know before you start
- Deleting a profile cannot be undone, and some operators will not let you reuse the same activation code. Disable a profile rather than delete it unless you are sure.
- Failed tasks leave notifications behind. Under Network > Mobile > eSIM profiles, the Status area can show pending notifications; processing them retries the step that failed.
- A downloaded profile still needs the right settings. Business and IoT profiles often need a specific APN, and a private APN or static IP will not work until it is entered.
- The router can hold more than one profile, but uses one at a time. Switching is done by changing which is the Default SIM.
- This is activation-code eSIM. The app method uses the same QR code or activation code approach as phones. IoT fleets moving to the newer SGP.32 standard, where profiles are pushed by a remote manager rather than entered on site, are a different workflow. There is more on the difference in eSIM and 5G.
Why this matters
I have lost count of the site visits that came down to “it needs internet to get internet”. Being able to commission an eSIM router with nothing more than the phone in your pocket removes that problem for engineers in the field, and it makes eSIM routers a realistic choice for remote cabinets, vehicles and temporary sites where there is no other connection to borrow.
If you are choosing between an eSIM router and a dual-SIM router with plastic SIMs, the questions to ask are in 5G eSIM routers: what to check before you buy. For background on the hardware, see the RUT241 eSIM and the RUTM52, and for managing a fleet of them remotely once they are online, Teltonika RMS.
Quick answers
Does the router need its own internet connection to load an eSIM?
Not with the RutOS app. The phone connects to the router’s Wi-Fi and uses its mobile data to download the profile.
Can I scan the operator’s QR code with the app?
Yes. The app offers a QR scan or manual entry of the activation code.
Which Teltonika routers support this?
Teltonika names the RUT241 (eSIM version), RUTM52 and ATRM50. Check the specific model is an eSIM variant and update the app and router firmware first.
What if the download fails?
Check the phone has mobile signal, that it is allowed to use mobile data while on a Wi-Fi network with no internet, and that you stayed in the app until it finished. Then retry, or process any pending notifications in the router’s eSIM profiles page.
